WHY THIS BOOK? This is the second book in which I share my response to the life of my grandfather, Carlos Mario Fraticelli, whom I never met. My first book was written in a chronological framework, starting with childhood memories of what I was told about him, followed by information obtained during different stages of my life, and concluding with a portrayal of how I currently view him. The most significant information for me was not historical facts, family stories or genealogical data. It was the discovery in 1977 that he was a poet. A decade ago, I was encouraged by my wife and children to share the story of my grandfather and his poetry beyond family and friendship networks, which I did. Five years ago I established a goal to publish two books, the first with forty four of his original Spanish Décima poems and the second with my English translations. I am making this effort because I have deep appreciation and respect for his talent, intelligence and skill as a poet, and I want him and his poetry to be recognized in the stories of the Puerto Rican diaspora.
